Lead Project Proposal #2

Executive Summary: For this project, I plan to go to the library and volunteer with a group of other kids to ease the workload on the librarians during the holiday. The project will be split into two days and one day will have two shifts. The dates will be December 18 and the 30. On the 18, we will be split into two groups of three and will be trained in the new technology and will help the patrons of the library learn how to use the technology. There will be two shifts, one from 10-1 and the other from 11-2. This task will interact with the public and will give volunteers a chance to learn how to use the new self check-in and check-out systems now in place. On December 30, the tasks will be less social, but will help the librarians with tasks specifically relating to them. Tasks will range from sorting to cleaning books. Overall, this project should be successful as long as all volunteers remain active and communicate.

We all go to the library and see the librarians working extremely hard for our benefit. Why not help them with their jobs? This is what I would like to do for my second leadership project. I see it as a way of giving back to those who work for our benefit.

By completing this project, I hope to help out both the patrons of the library and the librarians themselves. It will be completed over Winter break when more people will be using the libraries because they won't be at school

To achieve this project, I will coordinate the volunteer opportunity through the KCLS volunteer coordinator. After she referrers me to a library I will coordinate with them to achieve a date for the project and to organize times and activities. On the first date, December 18, we will be working in two shifts. One shift from ten a.m. to one p.m. and the other shift will be from eleven a.m. to two p.m., both shifts will be working on similar tasks. We will be receiving training on how to use the self check-out and self check-in systems now put in place at the library. We will then help patrons of the library with these tasks as they come and go. On December 30, the other group will be doing other tasks that help out the librarians like adding labels to books, cleaning books, and other related activities.

On December 18, I will know that the project was successful if we are able to help people learn how to use the new technology now in place at the library. After both shifts have ended, I will talk to all the volunteers that helped me to see how successful they were. On December 30, the volunteers will most likely be working together so I will measure how successful we were by how much work we were able to complete.

We will be working at a library located in the King County Library System for both dates. On December 18, we will be working with the new Self Check-in and out systems. So far, the people who will be volunteering are:
  1. Ariel W.
  2. Jennifer H.
  3. Anthea P.
  4. Austin C.
  5. Milia K.
  6. Lea O.
  7. Yasi Z.
  8. Lina L.
All of us are able to communicate well with others, which will be a great skill for the project on the 18th. My project coordinator and I communicate through e-mail. We communicate constantly which is why this was made possible. I have done a lot of volunteer work in the past, but none at the library, so this will be a new experience.

Timetable:
December 14:
  • need all forms from volunteers
  • turn forms into Library for processing
December 18:
  • Arrive at library at designated times
  • complete given tasks and training
December 30:
  • Arrive at library at given time
  • complete given tasks
This project will not cost any money

Overall, this will be an extremely worthwhile project. All volunteers will learn new skills and how to use the new library technology. We will also get to help the librarians of a public library. If this project is a success, we will be able to complete more of this sort in the future.

Helping Out

I helped out with Anthea's Sophomore get-together and it was extremely fun! We all brought food to share and then watched The Pink Panther starring Steve Martin and Beyoncé. The movie was hilarious and made everyone laugh. I brought soda and cups for everyone to share, and others brought things ranging from cake to popcorn. Overall, the party was a blast and I can't wait for the next one.
