The Projects Are Coming!!!

For the project that I am currently leading, there is one major upcoming event. It is on November 6, and is the day of the actual clean-up. To be prepared for this, I must stop by the store to get some refreshments and snacks. I must also constantly remind all the volunteers so they don't forget about the project.

I am currently helping Anthea P. with her project to create a sophomore get together. I helped Anthea figure out the date for the party, and I will be helping with the planning and set-up of the party. I am also doing the same for Jennifer H. and her party.

Projects, Projects, and more Projects!

I am planning to lead my first project which is cleaning up a road. There are many people helping me and they are:
1.       Ariel W.
2.       Milia K.
3.       Jennifer H.
4.       Anthea P.
5.       Nina D.
6.       Christine N.
7.       Nicole R.

I am also planning to help people with their projects. At the moment, I am helping with two parties. Jennifer H. is putting on one party, while Anthea P. is doing the other.

Unconquerable? I Think Not!!!

Driving Forces
  • Helps the environment
  • Gives animals a better living environment
  • Helps students earn their required community service hours
  • Allows students to be an active member in the society
  • Students get a chance to interact with each other
  • Students from different schools will get to meet each other
  • This is a great experience for everyone
  • Makes the community look better

Barriers
1.     The weather may be bad
2.     Students may be injured
3.     Students may be disgusted by trash
4.     Some may see this as a waste of time
5.     Students may become dehydrated or hungry
6.     Students will not work to the best of their ability
7.     Students may forget that they have committed to this project
8.     Students will not want to work with each other
9.     Students may not want to get dirty
10.   Students may not bring recommended gear

1.         If drivers are not aware of the workers, they could easily injure one of them. If someone is injured, it would be a big setback, which is why we will take many precautionary measures to ensure that this is not an issue. Each volunteer will be required to wear a hard hat and a reflective vest. This is so that drivers will be aware of your presence. Volunteers will also be asked not to walk in the road. They should walk off to the side to ensure that they are safe.
Most cars in the past drove carefully past us and slowed down to ensure our safety. Most drivers will probably do this again this year. All of our steps to ensure our safety will make sure that everyone is life uninjured. This project will be fun and we plan to keep it that way. As they say, "Safety First!"

2.         If volunteers forget about the project, it will take way longer than expected, and the people that do show up will have to work extremely hard. That is why I will work my hardest to remind kids of it. I will call them the day before to make sure they are still going and they know all the details. I have also given them this blog address so they can stay updated on what has been planned and so forth.
Making sure that everyone attends is important to the success of the project, which is why I have made it one of my priorities. Constant reminders to volunteers will help them keep track of when the project is and all the other important details of it.

3.         Dehydration and hunger will cause some people not to perform to the best of their ability. This will make the project clean-up take much longer than anticipated. That is why water and limited snacks will be provided. We ask that all volunteers eat breakfast before attending the clean-up to ensure that everyone has enough energy. With everyone's help, we should be able to finish before lunch.
During the project, if you become hungry, just ask one of the adults for a snack and they will happily grab you one from our limited supply. Juice may also be available. With everyone hydrated and full of energy, this project will go smoothly and quickly. Everyone should have a blast.

Class Time is Work Time!

Today in class, I was able to accomplish many things concerning my first project. First, I had time to create a to-do list which is posted below. Also, I was able to talk to a few people who told me they could help with the road clean-up. I will post the names of people who have signed up so everyone will know how many spots are still available.

To-Do List:
  • create a list of people who can help with the clean-up
  • Post the list on my blog and keep it updated
  • Take pictures during the clean-up
  • Post pictures after project

Operation Road Clean-Up

Project Time Table:
Start: November 6
End: November 6

Milestone Dates: October 23, 2010 and November 6, 2010
-Notify King County two weeks in advance of date (by the 23 of October)
-Know how many people are attending two weeks in advance (by the 23 of October)

Mentor: Kelly Jarvis

Whenever somebody deliberately litters, it disgusts me. Some people choose to hurt the environment when they could easily throw their garbage in the trash can. Their actions have inspired me to create my first project. I have decided that I will clean up a road through the King County Adopt-A-Road program. This project helps the environment and the community at the same time. Students also can earn required community service hours. When this project is complete, the road will be free of trash and debris. Trash bags, vests, etc. will be provided by King County, but people should bring rain boots because some of the garbage gets thrown into the ditches and you may need to walk in water to get to it. People should also bring rain gear in case the weather isn't great. In order for this project to be successful, I will need about 5-8 people to sign up to help. No training will be necessary, but people must be willing to work. Everyone will be working on removing trash from the road. There will be a couple adults to help supervise. So far, Anthea is planning on helping me, along with my mentor Kelly Jarvis.
